Polocrosse-international.orgSouth Africa Newsletter – News from Port Elizabeth Club

There was a last minute decision to move a tournament that was scheduled to be held in George to Port Elizabeth for the weekend of 24/25 May 2008.

Having said initially we would wait until our ‘estate’ was complete to host a tournament there, the need for this tournament was greater than the power to say no. As our playing fields were not ready, we had first looked at using a piece of land at the race club but when we moved the tournament to George we cancelled the application and by the time we agreed to take over the tournament again and have it back in PE, there was not enough time to schedule appointments and work parties to get the ‘borrowed land’ ready in time. We had no choice but to have the tournament at our ‘little play ground” down the road from our new club house.

As most of you know, organizing a tournament is no fun but the rewards of it being pulled off and people enjoying themselves and want to come to a tournament again, far out ways the nightmares (literally Friday night 12pm waking up and thinking the rest of the night/morning about what you had forgotten to do )

We divided the teams into Pool 1 and Pool 2, reason being that if you use pool A and pool B, players get the impression that they are playing in the A and B division, which is not always the case. All players were given (included in their entry fee was a playing shirt and braai pack) a whit playing shirt with an animal name on it, e.g. Hippo, Eagle etc, the reason for this is that I did not want them to be affiliated to any of their home clubs, for this weekend they belonged to their team and all players attending the tournament were divided up by handicap with each sections team being equally hc i.e. all the sections in pool 1′s hc were 7 and could play any position they wanted but not a turn-about.

Pool 2 consisted of 4 players per team, the same format as the junior classic (thanks Phillip for a brilliant idea) of equal handicap and players could play any position they wanted but not a turn-about. By doing this it allowed us to include the juniors into the seniors sections without being lost amongst the adult players and this also gave them an opportunity to feel important in a team and not just a ‘h/c”

The eventual outcome of the tournament were the winners, Team Rhino, consisting of John Mansfield, Simon Davidson and Ruth McKenzie, with the runners up after a sudden death and winning by 1 point being Leopards consisting of Belinda Dunford Samantha Bartlett, Wil-Marie Wolhuter, so we thought?! …..

Due to an injury to Samantha’s horse the previous day, I leant her my main horse (the grey) and pulled my second horse from the 2nd Pool (my chestnut) where I was doubling up (sacrificing my second team although they were winning in the 2nd pool) to play it in the 1st pool otherwise there would be no team (and I really thought my 2nd team could win without me!) We went on for the first and second chukka of the 1st pool and we were struggling a little so I decided that Samantha and I should swop horses and positions for the last chukka, she go to 3 and I go to 1, (little did I now that it was against the rules to swop horses!)

As per normal we went on the field and advised the umpires and opposition that we had made the change in positions and everyone could see that I was no longer on a chestnut horse but that I was now playing my grey (not hard to miss the difference) and nothing was said by anyone, until it all came down to the sudden death were I eventually scored and we had won, what a bitter sweet moment, only to be told a few minutes later, sorry girls, you were not permitted to swop horses! So we had to give up our win to the Zebra’s, Leigh Mansfield, Dennis Sanderhaus and Paul Davidson, next time guys!

The 2nd Pool would have been won by my 2nd team but they just could not pull it off and were well beaten by Hippo team consisting of Antoinette Matthias, Jolene, Kevin Knock (dev)and Keith Kuhn, with the runners up being the Eagles, Ryno Erasmus, Robyn Davidson, Solly Peter (dev).

In the 1st pool the best no.1 went to John Mansfield , best no.2 Chris Kumst and best no.3 Belinda Dunford and in the 2nd pool best no.1 went to Ryno Erasmus, best no 2 Jolyne Doran and best no.3 Keith Kuhn Best horse and rider combination went to Kevin Knock( dev)

Everyone had loads of fun, no injuries and the umpiring was fantastic. One thing that I can say in this game, you are never too old to learn!

Polocrosse was the real winner at the end of the day.
